About Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE
Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) has been delivering
Vocational Education and Training (VET) to students in Victoria
for more than 100 years. During this time, NMIT has expanded its
course offerings to provide a range of higher education programs.
With campuses across metropolitan Melbourne — Collingwood,
Epping, Fairfield, Heidelberg and Preston — as well as a campus
in regional Ararat and training centres around the state, NMIT
provides accessible higher education to many students. The
institute also operates Melbourne Polytechnic, a new vocational
and higher education provider that delivers courses in Prahran
and at the NMIT Epping campus.
NMIT takes pride in bringing a hands-on,
TAFE-style learning environment to its
higher education programs
Having developed its courses with industry input, NMIT takes
pride in bringing a hands-on, TAFE-style learning environment to
its higher education programs. Bachelor degrees are available in
the fields of accounting, agriculture and land management,
business, early years studies, education (early years),
engineering technology (civil), enterprise learning, equine
studies, hospitality management, illustration, information
technology, music, music industry, and writing and publishing.
Degrees offered at Melbourne Polytechnic include agriculture and
technology, business, enterprise learning, hospitality
management, information technology, and writing and publishing.
Two-year associate degrees are also available at NMIT, providing
a pathway into the second year of the bachelor degrees. In
addition, a pathway arrangement with La Trobe University (see
separate profile) allows students to articulate into a range of the
university’s bachelor degrees. NMIT has course intakes in
February and July.
Cafeterias and libraries are operated at most campuses,
adding to a range of practical facilities such as training
restaurants and a winery. NMIT recently redeveloped its Preston
campus, which now boasts new facilities for students in
disciplines such as education and business. The institute
provides a number of student support services, including
counselling, accommodation support, a Koorie Services Centre
and disability support, as well as various recreation options.
Course applications can be submitted through the Victorian
Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) or directly to the institute. See
the NMIT website for details. Applicants for bachelor degrees
must have completed Year 12 (with specified prerequisites) or
previous relevant tertiary study, although alternative entry is
available for mature age students. International students must
meet English language proficiency requirements.
NMIT charges full fees for its higher education courses,
although Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are available
in the bachelor of education (early years). It is also a government-
approved higher education provider, which means domestic
students in approved courses can access FEE-HELP and HECS-
HELP loans to cover part or all of their tuition fees. For more
information about FEE-HELP and HECS-HELP, see page 41.
