The University of Melbourne has joined the Massive Open Online
Course (MOOC) provider Coursera. Melbourne joins other
universities currently on the free online education portal, including
Stanford and Princeton in the US, which offer more than 120
subjects online to more than 1.3 million students around the
world. The university will use its experience with Coursera to
inform the continuing development of technology use in its
courses and consequently benefit on-campus students.
The university has introduced a new one-year diploma in
general studies as a sampler of Melbourne bachelor degrees in
science, commerce, environments and agriculture. The diploma
will be delivered at the Dookie campus as well as through local
TAFE institutes at Benalla, Shepparton, Wangaratta and
Wodonga. It is designed to give students in the Hume region the
opportunity to experience a Melbourne degree without having to
leave home and decide what they really want to do while studying
towards a meaningful outcome. It provides a structured stepping
stone towards a range of further options, including employment or
further study in a degree or TAFE program.
The university now offers four guaranteed entry pathways to
professional graduate courses for high-achieving Year 12 or
International Baccalaureate students. This means that eligible
students can begin their undergraduate degree at Melbourne
knowing that a graduate place is reserved for them after

Places are normally offered on the basis of an applicant’s
academic record only, but other entry criteria are specified for
Access Melbourne is a combined special entry and access
scholarship scheme for students who have experienced ongoing
circumstances that have affected their chance of gaining a place
at the university. Students from rural or isolated areas and
students from a financially disadvantaged background who apply
through Access Melbourne may be eligible for a guaranteed
place at Melbourne even if their ATAR is well below the cut-off.
Eligible students are guaranteed a Commonwealth Supported
Place (CSP) if their ATAR is 78.00 or above for arts,
environments or science; 88.00 or above for commerce; or 95.00
or above for biomedicine. Students can also apply through
Access Melbourne under other categories of disadvantage.
Guaranteed entry pathways allow high-achieving Year 12
students to secure a place in a graduate program once they have
completed their undergraduate studies.
Indigenous students are encouraged to apply for the
bachelor of arts (extended), a four-year arts degree for
Indigenous Australians that includes a year of bridging subjects to
ensure success and a residential component. Participating
students live in university residential colleges and benefit from the
extra support that colleges provide.
For an early start, Year 12 high achievers can study a range
of first-year subjects while still at school through the University of
Melbourne Extension Program.
All institutions have their own admission rules, so refer to
Melbourne’s website and the local tertiary admission centre’s
