offers many of the university’s TAFE courses, while the Brewery
Complex houses computer laboratories, a lecture theatre and
other specialist learning areas such as the retail training facility.
The SMB campus is home to the newly built Industry Skills
Centre and UB College, which offer a number of VET and
preparatory programs. The Arts Academy is found at the nearby
Camp Street campus. Here, a mix of heritage buildings and
modern, purpose-built facilities provide a backdrop for TAFE and
higher education courses in the visual and performing arts. Other
specialist facilities include the Building and Construction Skills
Centre and the Rural Sciences Skills Centre. Among the
university’s major research and innovation centres is the
University of Ballarat Technology Park at the Mt Helen campus,
which includes tenants such as the State Revenue Office,
Ambulance Victoria and IBM.
UB places undergraduate education high on its priority list,
and its relatively small numbers allow a friendly community
atmosphere with close contact between students and staff. UB
also does well at encouraging students from equity groups to
enter university, providing a number of pathways between
vocational and higher education courses.
Notable graduates include marathon runner Steve
Moneghetti; actress Libby Tanner; former Victorian Premier Steve
Bracks; Olympic steeplechaser Shaun Creighton; and
Paralympian Sandy Blythe.
The University of Ballarat and Monash University have
announced a proposition to create an expanded, regionally
focused university to better support local students, business,
industry and the community. Under the arrangement, Monash’s
Gippsland campus would join with the University of Ballarat under
a new name in 2014 and would offer a range of courses that take
advantage of the Gippsland campus location and the regional
expertise of the University of Ballarat.
UB’s new bachelor of health sciences gives students the
opportunity to tailor their own program. The three-year degree
incorporates core health science subjects and allows students to
choose a major in food and nutrition, biomedical science (health
and disease), biomedical science (molecular and cell biology),
nursing or psychology. Students can also branch out by choosing
electives from other health science study areas or from other
faculties. The program prepares students for employment in a
range of health disciplines, as well as postgraduate programs in
fields such as medicine, allied health and dietetics.
UB has recently opened an Immersive Domestic Nursing
Laboratory at its Mt Helen campus, which simulates a domestic
environment for nursing and paramedic students. The home
environment is separated from an adjoining theatrette by a glass
wall, which enables groups of students to observe their peers
engaging in training scenarios in the domestic space. Live video
and audio feeds also link the domestic space to the theatrette.
