Monash has introduced a number of new courses, including
a bachelor of mining engineering at the Clayton campus in
response to industry demand for mining professionals. Other new
degrees include a double degree in nursing practice and
midwifery at the Peninsula campus and a bachelor of
communication design at the Caulfield campus that combines
studies in visual communication, multimedia and motion graphics.
For the fourth year in a row, a Monash graduate has been
awarded the prestigious Victorian Rhodes Scholarship. Geoffrey
Pascoe, who completed a double degree in mechatronics
engineering and science, will travel to Oxford University to
complete a doctorate in engineering science focusing on the
development of self-driving vehicles.
See ‘Getting in’ ratings above and in
the Section 3 field of study profiles.
Access Monash is the umbrella
scheme covering pathway and
outreach programs, as well as
scholarships and financial support.
VET qualifications at certificate IV
level or above are considered for
entry to relevant courses,
sometimes with credit. Alternative
pathways are also available through
Monash College, which has diploma courses leading into the first
or second year of selected Monash degrees. The university’s
one-year diploma of tertiary studies also leads into the second
year of selected degrees. Students who do not satisfy the
university’s minimum entry requirements may be considered for
entry if they complete single units through Monash, other
universities or Open Universities Australia (see separate profile).
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) may be
considered for entry to courses in information technology and
nursing if applicants have no other entry qualifications. For
applicants who have completed the VCE, the university gives
extra consideration to those who achieve good results in the
General Achievement Test (GAT). The Monash University Special
Admissions Scheme aims to increase the participation of people
who were prevented from fulfilling their full potential in secondary
education through financial, geographical, cultural or personal
circumstances. The scheme ensures that these students receive
extra consideration during selection.
Talented students wanting an early start on their university
studies may be able to undertake Monash units during their final
secondary school year via Monash Extension, with studies
available in areas such as criminology, journalism and physics.
All institutions have their own admission rules, so refer to
Monash’s website and the local tertiary admission centre’s
